How server-side tagging helps marketers take control of first-party data and future-proof analytics.

Client-side tracking is dying, between browser restrictions, privacy laws and ad-blockers. Without first party data solutions, marketers are losing 30% of their conversion data.

Instead of relying on browser-based pixels and JavaScript tags, server-side tracking routes events through your own server, giving you control, cleaner data, and compliance peace of mind.

Here are 10 reasons why making the switch to server-side tracking is one of the smartest moves you can make in 2025.

  1. The Death of Third Party Cookies and the Rise of First Party Data
  2. Server-side Tracking Bypasses Ad Blockers and Browser Limits
  3. More Accurate Conversion Tracking with Server-to-Server Connections
  4. Use the Data Layer to Improve Site Speed and SEO Performance
  5. First Party Marketing allows for Data Ownership and Data Control
  6. Better Compliance with GDPR, Data Laws and Regulations
  7. Centralized data governance and smarter integrations
  8. More accurate attribution and cross-channel tracking accuracy :
  9. Build a First-Party Data Strategy for Long-Term Marketing Success
  10. Stay Competitive with Privacy-Safe, Server-Side Data Solutions

1. The Death of Third-Party Cookies and the Rise of First-Party Data

Google is officially phasing out third party cookies, whilst other browsers like Safari and Firefox have already implemented this.

This means any tracking using out-dated third party cookies is becoming unreliable.

Server-side tracking doesn’t depend on cookies browsers can block; instead it uses first-party data collected directly through your own domain.

2. Server-Side Tracking Bypasses Ad Blockers and Browser Limits

Adblockers and privacy tools are preventing client-side setups (e.g., Meta Pixel) from sending data.

With server-side tracking, your website sends conversion data directly from your own server to the ad platform’s API.

This bypasses ad blockers entirely.

3. More Accurate Conversion Tracking with Server-to-Server Connections

Multiple ad platforms now rely on server-side integrations to improve attribution. These can be sent to Meta’s Conversion API (CAPI) and Google’s Enhanced Conversions securely.

By sending first party data via the backend/ server, you ensure key events like Purchase reach your ad account, even when browsers can’t send them.

After switching to accurate server-side tracking, our e-commerce skincare client cut cost per purchase by 39.29%. Discover how this data-driven approach delivered measurable ROI in our case study.

4. Use the Data Layer to Improve Site Speed and SEO Performance

Traditional client-side tracking stores JavaScript in the browser; this slows the site down as the script has to load before the site.

With server-side tagging, this moves onto your server. Instead of firing dozens of scripts, your site sends key interaction details into a data layer, a structured, lightweight object that holds clean event data (like product info, transaction values, and user actions).

Your server container then picks up that data layer feed, processes it once, and securely routes it to the right destinations (Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, etc.).

5. First Party Marketing allows for Data Ownership and Data Control:

With server-side tracking, all the raw data first passes through your server, not Google’s, Meta’s, or TikTok’s.

You decide:

  • What’s collected
  • What’s anonymized or hashed
  • What’s shared with third parties

That’s first-party data ownership in action and it’s the foundation of any modern first party data strategy.

6. Better Compliance with GDPR, Data Laws and Regulations

Server-side set-ups allow us to enforce user consent preferences more consistently.

You can filter, redact, or delete user data before it ever leaves your system; this is nearly impossible with client-side scripts firing on-page.

This approach aligns neatly with data minimization principles in privacy laws.

7. Centralized data governance and smarter integrations

When every event flows through your server, you gain full visibility and control over how customer data moves across your tech stack. This allows for your server-side setup to become the single source of truth for all marketing and analytics events.

That means:

  • Consistent data formatting across platforms (GA4, Meta, TikTok, etc.)
  • Easier syncing with CDPs, CRMs, and BI tools
  • Clear audit trails for data compliance and attribution accuracy

The result? A cleaner, more transparent data ecosystem that empowers first party data marketing, analytics, and compliance teams to work from the same reliable dataset.

8. More accurate attribution and cross-channel tracking accuracy :

Server-side tracking, using Stape’s seamless integration with Shopify and Google Tag Manager allows for greater data attribution. As user journeys are stored when the user returns to the site the original UTM carries over within their new browser session. This allows us to understand attribution paths beyond the ad accounts given attribution window, and across platforms. As users may purchase 5 days after seeing an ad or 5 weeks after seeing an ad. This allows us to ensure their entire purchase journey is stored and we are able to look in google analytics at more complete attribution paths.

9. Build a First-Party Data Strategy for Long-Term Marketing Success

Server-side tracking allows you to prepare for what’s coming next. As we look to an AI search environment LLM’s prefer websites where the data is clean and consistent. This assists with AI driven ad optimizations, machine learning models, and predictive analytics.

10. Stay Competitive with Privacy-Safe, Server-Side Marketing

As third-party tracking collapses, early adopters of server-side technology are gaining a major edge in their marketing.
Better data means better targeting, better optimization, and better ROI; while competitors relying on outdated pixels are left guessing. Your ad accounts will have accurate, clean data fuelling their ads for real-time marketing results driven by first party strategy.

First Party Data FAQ’s

What is Client-Side Tracking?

Previously, you’d be able to store a Facebook pixel in the browser. This means when a user goes from an ad onto the website their events are sent via this pixel to the ad account servers. If the user has any ad blockers or if Safari’s Tracking Preventing (STP) is in place it will limit the data and accuracy of the data received by the ad accounts.

What are Third-Party Cookies?

A third-party cookie is created by someone else’s domain, often an advertising or analytics platform (e.g., facebook.com or doubleclick.net) that’s embedded on the page through scripts, pixels, or ads.

What is server-side tracking?

When the user clicks on an ad and completes a purchase. However, the website’s back-end (Google tag manager server container) captures the event on the server. This then directly sends the event information hashed to the ad platforms with additional context, directly to the Facebook servers via the Conversions API (CAPI). This bypasses ad blockers and browser restrictions because the data never depends on the user’s browser. This allows for richer data to be sent to the ad accounts, allowing for deeper learning and more effective ads strategy.
